North Bruce Rural Water Scheme
Update: Monday, 8 September 2025
The boil water notice that is in place for consumers on the North Bruce rural water scheme and an additional 25 properties within Waihola that are fed water from the rural scheme has now been lifted.
Council is now in a position to confidently lift the boil water notice after improving processes and control systems at the North Bruce water treatment plant. Operating modifications have been implemented, and compliance has been met for July and August at the plant.
Reticulation sampling has been completed and consistent sampling results have been received from throughout the network, meaning Council is satisfied that the water quality is now safe for consumption.
The aluminium advisory remains in place, as occasional test results are still showing elevated aluminium levels that we suspect are sediment that is being stirred up in the pipes. We will continue to monitor this and flush where necessary.
In November 2024, a boil water notice was lifted for 229 households in Waihola, following commissioning of the Milton to Waihola pipeline project. However, 25 properties in the town remained on the North Bruce scheme line. These 25 properties will no longer need to boil their water before consumption, along with all other consumers connected to the North Bruce rural water scheme.
Mayor Bryan Cadogan expressed his gratitude for the community’s patience while Council worked to find a long-term solution for the scheme, as opposed to a short-term, temporary fix.
“It can be frustrating when major infrastructure improvements take so long to come to fruition. However, to now be in a position of confidence in the water we are producing for the North Bruce community is something to be proud of. Staff have work tirelessly to get to this stage, they should be immensely proud too”.
Now that the boil water notice has been lifted, it is advised that consumers have their own water tanks cleaned if they have not done this already.
Council thanks the rural North Bruce community for their patience and understanding while we worked to reach compliance for this water scheme.
