Second Hand Sunday is back for another year, and locals are invited to get involved.
After a last-minute cancellation in 2024 due to flooding, the annual event will be returning on Sunday, 5 October, in an effort to help rehome any household items that residents may be looking to dispose of.
From 9am to 12pm, households across the district can place their unwanted but usable items at the end of their driveway or near the mailbox, free for others to take home.
Think of it as a giant, district-wide garage sale for preloved items, only better. No money involved, just neighbours helping neighbours.
Council’s Waste Education Officer Scott Martin says the event is all about making decluttering easy, fun, and good for the planet.
“It’s a simple way to give your old stuff a new life, and keep it out of landfill,” Mr Martin says.
“If you’re planning a spring clean, now’s the perfect time to start.”
To take part, residents are asked to register their address with Clutha District Council by Monday, 29 September. This allows Council to share a full list of participating households, so treasure hunters know where to look on the day.
On Sunday, 5 October, at 9:00am:
- Sort out your items and pick a clear, safe spot to place them – either your driveway or near your letterbox.
- Download and print the Second Hand Sunday poster from Council’s website and display it prominently on your mailbox.
The event runs until 12pm noon, and Council reminds participants to remove any uncollected items by 5pm the same day.
“Leaving items out for an extended period of time could breach our local bylaws, so please make sure everything is packed away after the event,” Mr Martin adds.
Second Hand Sunday is your chance to connect with the community and reduce waste at the same time. Rehome those items that you no longer need, or hop in the car and hunt for a hidden gem.
