Simplifying Local Government - Statement from Mayor Jock Martin

A statement from Mayor Jason (Jock) Martin, following Central Government's announcement today regarding Simplifying Local Government and the Head Start proposal.

I want to acknowledge the significant time, effort, and resources that have gone into developing the Head Start proposal that the Clutha District is part of.

This was completed under an extremely tight deadline, and it is difficult not to feel frustrated at the news that the Government needs more time to make decisions.

We worked under the expectation that decisions may have been made this month.

The Head Start reforms have the potential to impact jobs and regional representation, and it’s important that all options are carefully considered. My hope is that this process is not dragged out forever.

Working to such tight deadlines is challenging for everyone, and expecting a comprehensive response within this timeframe was always going to be difficult so perhaps it’s not a complete surprise to hear of a delay.

What we need now is strong leadership, clear communication, and timely decisions. Kiwis deserve certainty so they can plan for the future with confidence.

We need answers, sooner rather than later.
