Turning organic waste, that’s kitchen scraps, lawn clippings and autumn leaves into rich compost can be easier than many people think — and a free community workshop next month will show locals how to get started.
Clutha District Council Waste and Greenspace Team Leader Scott Martin will host the composting workshop on Saturday, 17 October, in partnership with Project Bruce and Milton Community Gardens.
Composting is a great way for households to reduce waste, care for their gardens and make better use of everyday organic material, Scott says.
“Composting isn’t hard to do, but it does take a little know-how and a bit of regular care,” he says.
“This workshop is a chance for people to ask questions, see how it works in practice, and leave feeling confident to compost right at home.”
Council supports home composting because about half of what goes into kerbside rubbish bins is organic material. Keeping food and garden waste out of landfill helps reduce pressure on waste services and creates a useful soil conditioner for gardens.
“We want to encourage people to turn waste into something productive,” Scott says.
“Your garden will love it, and it’s a practical thing households can do to make a difference.”
The workshop will cover the basics of creating a healthy compost pile, including where to place a compost bin or area, how to balance food and garden material, and which composting option might suit different households.
Participants will also have the chance to get hands-on and help create compost onsite at Milton Community Gardens.
“Come along and get your hands dirty — or bring gloves if you’d rather not,” Scott says.
“It will be practical, friendly and useful for anyone who wants to give composting a go.”
Workshop topics include:
• Bin composting, bokashi and worm farming
• Tips and tricks for composting well at home
• The science behind composting and creating a healthy compost pile
