Recycling returns to transfer stations

Household recycling is returning to Clinton, Lawrence, Milton, Ōwaka and Tapanui transfer stations from Monday, 1 June.

Council Waste Team Leader Scott Martin says it’s important to keep encouraging people to recycle and provide opportunities for them to do it easily.

The five stations were temporarily closed this year but will now operate 24/7 with unmanned yellow lidded recycling bins dedicated solely to household recyclable materials.

“Putting in recycling means our communities, particularly our rural residents have easier access to recycling, which aligns to the Council’s goals of having vibrant rural towns and working towards a sustainable environment,” Scott says.

From June 1, residents can drop off clean paper, cardboard, plastics (grades 1, 2, 5) aluminium and tin cans at the five sites. No glass will be accepted, nor will plastic lids.

All transfer stations will be unmanned and self-serviced. Residents can drop off their recycling at any time.

The sites will operate under a three-strike approach that is also used for kerbside collection, to help prevent unwanted or non-recyclable items being dropped off at the stations.

“We want to raise awareness and educate that the sites are for household recycling only to ensure the recycling process is as efficient and environmentally as possible.

“If any site is found to have contaminated or unwanted waste left there or misused three times within a short period the stations will be closed.”
