Mayoral Relief Fund open to donations after severe weather event

Following a government contribution of $50,000 today, the Clutha District Mayoral Relief Fund is now open to accept donations from the public.

Any person or organisation wishing to donate to the Clutha District Mayoral Relief Fund can deposit funds into the Clutha District Council bank account 03 1734 0061851 02. When making a donation please use the reference “Mayoral Relief Fund”.

The fund has been established in response to the devastating effects of Thursday’s severe winds weather event.

Clutha District Mayor Elect Jock Martin says Clutha’s emergency response team has been receiving an overwhelming amount of offers to help from locals and the wider public, and the Fund offers a straightforward way to channel that support.
“The generosity, ahora and compassion coming from Clutha’s people has been in full display over the last few days and this fund allows us to provide relief and support to the people that need it most.

“The effects of the weather event will be felt well beyond the declared State of Emergency. We are in for a long haul ahead, with a long recovery period expected.”

All contributions from the local community and those outside of the region would be greatly appreciated.

“The impact from this natural disaster has been extensive. We’ve seen the obvious damage of trees and powerlines down – we still have residents without power, communications and even water. There’s a lot of mahi happening on the ground, and even more yet to be done. It’s going to take a long time to get back to normal for many people.”

The Fund will be open to any resident, ratepayer, business owner, and not-for-profit organisation in the Clutha District that have suffered financial hardship as a result of the weather event that began on Thursday, 23 October 2025.

The fund will provide assistance on a one-off basis for extraordinary circumstances where real need can be shown.

Further details about how to apply, including the application form, will be made available shortly. In the meantime, Mayor Elect Jock is asking for everyone to dig deep for what will be a long road to recovery.
