Nominations open for Clutha District Council elections

Clutha residents are encouraged to stand for their community in this year’s local elections.

Nominations for candidates wishing to stand in the 2025 local elections open tomorrow (Friday, 4 July).

Clutha District Council Chief Executive Steve Hill says “We’re asking people to consider putting their names forward as a candidate to represent their community in local government. This is a chance to play a part in making decisions that contribute directly to the Clutha District and make a difference on issues that matter locally.”

Nominations will open for Mayor and Councillors for the Clutha District Council, the West Otago and Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Boards and local licensing trusts. To stand for election, candidates need to be over 18 and enrolled to vote.

Mr Hill said people will be able to complete and submit their nomination forms online.

“This is the first time CDC’s nomination forms can be completed online via the Election Services Portal and we’re encouraging people to do this.”

However, the traditional paper forms would still be available from council’s website or at CDC offices, community libraries and the isite.

Those wishing to stand have until Friday noon on 1 August to submit their nomination form, either online or in person at the above CDC locations.

A joint Clutha District Council and Otago Regional Council Candidates Information Evening will be held at the South Otago Town and Country Club in Balclutha on Wednesday, 9 July.

“This is an opportunity for people to learn more about standing for council, the role of elected members, the nomination and election processes and to ask questions,” Mr Hill said.

Voting documents will be sent out from 9 September and must be received by the electoral officer by midday on Election Day – Saturday, 11 October.
