Precautionary strong wind watch issued - Friday 2 October
Metservice has issued a precautionary Strong Wind Watch for the Clutha District, between 3am and 12pm Friday, 2 October 2026.
The alert is precautionary at this stage, with a moderate chance it will be upgraded to a Warning.
Another update is expected from Metservice at 9pm this evening. Council will be monitoring the situation overnight and will provide updates as needed.
There are precautions you can take to get ready in case the alert is upgraded to a warning.
Prepare your property by securing items that can be picked up by strong winds.
Be mindful of lighting outdoor fires or burn piles. Delay lighting any outdoor fires if you can.
If the alert is upgraded to a warning, potential impacts may include damage to unsecured structures, powerlines or trees, especially any trees that have became unstable in previous winds, or those with soft, wet ground conditions.
Driving may be difficult if the alert is upgraded, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
