Latest News & Notices

Fire Danger

The Otago Rural Fire Authority has issued a fire danger alert.
Gale NW Winds are forecast to hit Otago on Thursday through to Friday. This will be coupled with high temperatures and low relative humidity. The fire danger will be EXTREME in Queenstown Lakes, Central Otago and Waitaki Lakes. The fire danger will be 'VERY HIGH' to 'EXTREME' in Coastal Otago including Oamaru and Dunedin. Areas of Clutha may get some respite with winds forecast to be strong to very strong arriving from the NE however a high level of care is still required. What this means:
- Fires can start easily in these conditions - all it takes is a spark or a hot engine.
- Any fire that escape will be difficult to contain.
- All fire permits are revoked effectively immediately (this will be reviewed on Friday morning). Action required:
- Take extra care when operating machinery such as farm equipment, mowers and chainsaws etc. Undertake operations early in the morning or even better postpone your operation/activity.
- If you have lit a fire in recent weeks please check that it is fully extinguished.
- Dial 111 immediately if you see smoke in the area.

Naish Park Duck Pond

Council is aware that a recent news story about the Naish Park duck pond sparked comments from some residents. But, we want to be clear that no decision has yet been made about removing the ducks or filling in the pond. Unfortunately, the quality of the pond water, the amount of duck excrement on paths and furniture, and the damage the ducks are doing to the grass has become a problem and a safety concern. The area is cleaned four times a year, but this is obviously not enough and any extra cleans would would cost about $500 a clean. A review of the district's parks is scheduled to begin in the next 12 months, when Council will look at all the options. However, before any decision is made about the future of the pond, the public will get a chance to have their say. At this stage it would be great if people could stop feeding the ducks to see if this reduces the problem. Thanks very much.
