Long term boil water notices

Clutha District Council is advising all users on the Balmoral 1, Balmoral 2 and Tuapeka East Rural Water Schemes that their boil water notice will stay in place for the summer months.

Group Manager Service Delivery Jules Witt said their water schemes were already running low and it was likely they would experience long-term water outages during the summer months unless the long term boil water notice was implemented.

“All three of the rural water scheme committees have informed Council that long-term water shortages is something they do not want to happen as some people were out of water for three weeks last year, which had huge ramifications for stock management.”

Mr Witt said the long term boil water notice has been agreed to by the Rural Water Scheme Committees as a temporary solution to expected water outages over summer.

Council will supplement the water from the treatment plant with chlorinated river water to enable the schemes to be replenished. This may be introduced at times of low water availability such as drought or following heavy rainfall. However, as the water is unfiltered all water scheme users will need to boil their drinking water for at least one minute and this will be for all of summer.”

Council acknowledges that this will be quite an inconvenience for everyone but with a dry summer forecasted, if we don’t do this many users could be out of water for a long time.

“We believe we have minimised the risks to our residents through more frequent sampling of the water supply and an elevated level of chlorine to ensure bacteria are not present. As an added measure we are engineering a solution where water is taken from the Balclutha water supply and pumped into the affected schemes so that the Waitahuna treatment plant can deliver fully treated water. These options are currently going through a feasibility study and, if implemented will provide another option during times of low water availability.”

Council has worked with Public Health South who have also agreed to this temporary solution.

Council will be sending boil water notice information to all users on the three schemes.
