Clutha District Council is asking Kaitangata residents and ratepayers to give their feedback on what to do with the Kaitangata Hall.

Clutha District Council Group Manager Service Delivery Jules Witt said Council acknowledged that the Kaitangata Hall and old Borough buildings were past their use-by-date and were uneconomical to fix.

“Council has approved funds for the demolition of the existing hall and contributed to the new Community Centre,” Mr Witt said.

He said the South Otago Woodcraft Club had expressed an interest in salvaging some timber from the hall but that would need to be done carefully as there were seismic and asbestos concerns with the building.

“We will salvage the Memorial outside the hall and this will be relocated to a new location near the new community centre building. This will be done in consultation with the community centre committee.”

Council also wants to demolish the old borough building which also has asbestos and other issues.

“However someone may have a long-term interest in this building and if there is interest other options can be explored for its future use,” Mr Witt said.

To give your feedback visit the Clutha District Council website cluthadc.govt.nz/consultation to make an online submission or write down your thoughts and drop off to any of the Clutha District Council offices or post to PO Box 25, Balclutha 9240.

Please give us your feedback by Friday 10 May.
