Road Closures
For a variety of reasons, Council sometimes needs to close a road. Common reasons are road and bridge maintenance, public events, or damage during an emergency.
All current and planned road closures are listed in the Alerts section of this website.
Road works can involve anything from minor work to fix a pot hole which takes only a few minutes to a major project to rebuild a section of road that has completely worn out..
Emergency closures
During an emergency roads may be closed that look fine at first sight. They may even be navigable. However, they may also be badly damaged and dangerous to use.
Road users are asked to respect Council's instructions and not to drive on closed roads.
Road users need to be aware that any damage done to their vehicles while driving on a closed road is not covered by insurance.
Long-term closures
The following roads remain closed on a long-term basis after severe damage during the weather event of early 2020:
- Burning Plain Road, Clinton
- River Bank Road, Inch Clutha
Event closures
To apply to have a road temporarily closed for an event contact Council.
