It’s great to see the site being used and valued by locals.
To keep it available, we need everyone’s help to make sure only the right items are dropped off.
The site has now received its third strike for contamination, which means it is at risk of closing if things don’t improve.
We know this service is important to many people, so let’s work together to recycle right and keep it open.
What’s not going so well?
The main issue is contamination. This happens when items such as glass, plastic lids, or other materials that cannot be accepted are left at the site. Please don’t take glass or plastic lids to the transfer station.
Why can’t we drop off glass?
We know glass recycling is important to the community. District-wide glass recycling is being considered for the future, but it is not expected to be available until 2027. When the transfer station reopened for household recycling, it was set up as a no-cost solution. Adding glass back in would come with extra costs, and that is not viable right now.
How can we recycle right?
At transfer stations in Clinton, Lawrence, Milton, Ōwaka and Tapanui, you can recycle clean paper, cardboard, plastics 1, 2 and 5, and aluminium and tin cans.
Please leave out glass and plastic lids, as these cannot be accepted and can contaminate the recycling.
What does the third strike mean?
These sites operate under a three-strike system. If contamination or misuse continues, the Milton transfer station may have to close.
We’d really appreciate everyone taking a moment to check what can and can’t go in before dropping items off. Small actions make a big difference and help keep this service available for the community.
