A by-election will be held for the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board to fill the vacancy created after the resignation of board member Anne Cheng.
With an extensive experience working in Local Government in New Zealand, Anne retired to Lawrence in 2016 and was elected to the board with 416 votes in the 2025 local body elections.
Anne is relocating from Lawrence to Oamaru.
“I have enjoyed living in Lawrence and it has been an interesting experience serving on the Community Board,” she says.
“I offer my best wishes to whoever takes up the challenge of serving the local community on the board.”
Board chairman Geoff Davidson thanked Anne for her time on the board and wished her well for the future.
The by-election will be held on 16 October 2026, under the first past the post electoral system by postal vote for one member.
Nominations open on 9 July 2026 and close on 6 August 2026.
From 16 September 2026 voting documents will be delivered.

Candidates must be nominated by a nomination paper obtained during normal business hours from 9 July 2026 from:
- Clutha District Council’s Main Office, 1 Rosebank Terrace, Balclutha
- Lawrence Service Centre, 5 Peel St, Lawrence
- By phoning 0800 922 822
Nominations of candidates must be in the hands of the electoral officer or an electoral official at any of the above locations, no later than 12 noon, 6 August 2026.
