The Clutha District is situated on the south east coast of New Zealand's South Island, about an hour's drive south of Dunedin. At the last Census in 2006, the district had a population of 16,839 spread over an area of about 6,362km2. The main townships are Balclutha (population 4,062), Milton (1,887), Kaitangata (810), Tapanui (744), Lawrence (432), Owaka (327), Stirling (309), Clinton (291), Kaka Point (201) and Waihola (200). Clutha Country is primarily supported by successful agricultural opportunities with many types of farming and forestry dominating the area's economy.
