New Zealand Police   

In an emergency / disaster situation:

  • The emergency services may not be in a situation to offer immediate help.

  • Normal services such as electricity, gas, water, telephone, transport etc. may also be disrupted.

  • You should plan for your family to be self sufficient for 3 days.

 

Neighbourhood Support groups

Have you a neighborhood support group in your immediate area?

bullet

If not, get to know your neighbors and set one up.

bullet

Get to know the skills of people in your neighborhood who may be able to help - e.g. nurse / tradesman etc.

bullet

Get to know what resources exist in your neighborhood, e.g. chainsaws, boats, motorcycles, gas BBQ's, gas heaters etc.

 

bullet

Arrange for authorized people to collect your children from school and give this list to the school.

bullet

Establish a meeting point in the event of your house being unusable or your family separated.

bullet

Establish a means of communicating with family who get separated.

bullet

Keep family valuables (including documents) readily available in case of hurried evacuation.

New Zealand Fire Service   

Be wise - be prepared. Before you have a fire make sure that you have:

  • A Smoke Alarm installed in Your Home
  • A Fire Extinguisher in Your Home (and do you know how to use it?)
  • An Exit Drill Planned for Evacuation of Your Family

Everyone should know about it and practice it regularly!

Do you and your family know how to:

bullet Stop, Drop and Roll (if your clothes should catch fire)
bullet Crawl Low in Smoke 
bullet Touch a Door to check it for Heat (do not open hot doors)
bullet Call the Fire Service on 111 (seek neighbours help if your telephone is not working)

During the fire:

bullet Alert everyone of the fire
bullet Get everyone out of your home and stay out
bullet Close Doors on the way out
bullet Dial 111 from a safe place

Medical Information   

PREPARE FOR ANY EMERGENCY BY
Having a three day supply of:

During an emergency

bullet Prescribed medications (wherever possible).
bullet Drinking water, (allow 3 liters per person per day).
bullet Food Personal hygiene items (e.g. soap, toothbrushes, etc.).
bullet Ensuring the family's immunizations are up to date (e.g. Tetanus / diphtheria).
bullet Having some large plastic bags on hand (can be used for keeping dry or warm, and for lining waste buckets).
bullet Having clothing for all weathers (e.g. the summer sun, and the winter cold/rain).
bullet Follow the health advice which will be broadcast by your local radio station.
bullet Use your stored food and drinking water.
bullet Only drink other water if it is recommended by health authorities.
bullet Do not use or flush toilets if the drains are damaged.
bullet Make and use a temporary toilet outdoors or use a lined plastic bucket.
bullet Plastic bags of toilet and other waste can be tied and safely stored for later collection.
bullet Perishable waste can be buried   protect all waste from animals and insect pests.

Civil Defence   

  • Know what to do in any emergency (flood, storm, earthquake, chemical spill, etc.)
  • Find out what can be done to reduce the effects of these hazards.
  • Know where your nearest Civil Defence Emergency Center is located (to either give or receive help).
  • Get to know your neighbors (they will be your first source of help.   Know those who may need your help.)
  • Prepare a family emergency plan.   (List tasks for those who are at home when a disaster occurs, e.g. turning off electricity and water, if necessary.)
  • Have a Survival Kit at home, (water, food, medical needs, radio, torch, batteries, etc.)
  • Get to know the sound of the Civil Defence warning sirens.   (They alert you to turn on and listen to your radio to receive emergency instructions and information.)
  • Prepare a plan to reunite your family if you get separated by the emergency.
  • Learn First Aid and Basic Life Support techniques.
  • Don't forget to include for the care of your pets in your emergency planning.
