CIVIL DEFENCE - YOUR DISASTER SURVIVAL KIT

During a major disaster, you may need to leave your home in a hurry. If this happens, you will need to be able to grab a personal kit to take with you. Each person in the house should have a small bag, into which they can put most of their GETAWAY KIT.

Family documents such as:

  • Birth and marriage certificates

  • Insurance policies

  • Driver’s licence

  • Passports

  • Irreplaceable family photos

Personal hygiene items such as:

  • Towels and soap
  • Toothbrushes
  • Toilet paper

Blankets and clothing to provide

  • Warmth and protection from the weather
  • A change of clothes in case you are prevented from coming home for a few days

Most of the items which you will need for a GETAWAY KIT are already part of your DISASTER SURVIVAL KIT - other things you will need are:

Emergency food supplies such as:

  • Energy snack bars
  • Fruit juices
  • A transistor radio and torch for the whole group. (Don’t forget the batteries)

Baby's and small children's supplies

  • Food and drink
  • Change of clothing
  • Favourite toy or activity

Emergency clothing

  • Wind proof and rain proof
  • Sun hats for hot weather
  • Strong shoes for outdoors
  • Blankets or sleeping bags

Food & Water

  • Canned or dried food
  • A manual can opener
  • A primus or BBQ to cook on
  • Bottled Water

Special supplies for those with disabilities

  • Special glasses
  • Hearing aids
  • Mobility aids
  • A First aid kit and essential medicines for chronic illness and severe allergies
  • Spare toilet paper
  • and plastic rubbish bags for your emergency toilet

Special supplies for babies

  • Food
  • Clothing

Emergency lighting

  • Candles and a lighter (or matches)
  • Waterproof torches and spare batteries
  • Spare bulbs for the torches
  • Radio and spare batteries

Pet supplies

  • Food
  • Dog leash
  • Small cage

Some hints about your Disaster Survival Kit

  • These items are probably already in your house - make sure you know where to find them in an emergency
  • Put all items, especially the blankets and clothing, into plastic bags (leakproof), to keep them dry
  • Keep the Disaster Survival Kit in a place which will be easily accessible in an emergency
  • Make sure everyone in the house can find it in the dark
  • Make someone responsible for checking (and renewing) the food and water every 12 months
  • Make someone responsible for checking the strength of the batteries in torches and radio every three months. Renew the batteries if the power is low

If you prefer to keep your Disaster Survival Kit items in the house so that you can use them, make sure you know where to find them when an emergency occurs.
