CIVIL DEFENCE - SCHOOLS CHECKLIST

 

4.bmp (3190 bytes) Have you considered the premises and grounds?
[   ] Are premises structurally sound, or is remedial work necessary?
[   ] Is heavy furniture and equipment, (especially in manual craft rooms), securely fastened to structural elements of the building?
[   ] Are heavier items stored on lower shelves?
[   ]  Do shelves have edges to stop objects from falling off easily?
[   ] Are laboratory chemicals stored in shelves with a lip or fastening strap?
[   ] Are windows and glazed doors fitted with safety glass?
[   ] Will outdoor play equipment remain stable in an earthquake, or during high winds?
[   ] Are hazardous areas of the school labelled adequately?
[   ] Is there a First Aid kit and manual (in each area of a large school)?   Is it checked and replenished regularly?
[   ] Are there fire fire extinguishers?   Have they been serviced regularly?
[   ] Is there a transistor radio, with spare batteries, to listen to emergency instructions and information?
4.bmp (3190 bytes)  Do the teachers and other staff understand their responsibilities?
[   ] To first ensure their own safety, so they can then care for the pupils.
[   ] To keep pupils inside after an emergency, unless premises are obviously unsafe.
[   ] To remain with the children until all have been collected by a parent or other responsible adult.
[   ] To prevent danger and further damage by turning off electricity, water and gas at the mains, and securing laboratory chemicals, after an emergency.
[   ] To learn First Aid, and keep this training up to date.
[   ] To know how to use the fire extinguishers.
[   ] To keep a note, on the roll, of who has collected which children after an emergency.
[   ] To know where the nearest Civil Defence Emergency Centre is located, in case help is needed.
4.bmp (3190 bytes) Are the pupils prepared for an appropriate reaction to an emergency?

Have emergency drills for earthquake, (e.g. duck and cover), been practiced?

[   ]

Has a fire evacuation drill been practiced? This drill could also be used if there is a need to evacuate the premises after an emergency.

[   ]

Do they know that the teachers will look all children, in their care, until it is safe for parents to come an collect them?

[   ]

Are parents prepared to stay and help teachers, if necessary?

[   ]

Do any of the parents have specialist skills or equipment that may be useful?
4.bmp (3190 bytes) Have you considered how to safely dispose of waste, if the sewerage system and rubbish collection are not functioning?

[   ] Do they have tools, equipment, and/or skills that could be useful?
[   ] Are they prepared to come and help the teachers and parents?
[   ] Is there a Neighborhood Support Group which may be able to come to your assistance?
[   ] Have you met with them, and discussed this assistance?

After an Emergency

  • Keep calm
  • Remember your personal safety
  • Think before you act
  • Turn on and listen to the radio - nearest local operating station
  • Check on your family - reassure and calm them
  • Check on your neighbours Stay inside if possible - DO NOT go sightseeing!
  • Render First Aid
  • Extinguish fires
  • Turn Off all gas, electricity and water mains
  • Check and secure pets
  • Secure chemicals
  • Gather the items for your survival and getaway kits
  • Wear sensible clothing for the conditions (especially footwear) if going out
  • Avoid using the telephone, unless essential
  • Contact Civil Defence for assistance, if needed - check for the nearest operating Civil Defence Emergency Centre
