CIVIL DEFENCE - AT HOME CHECKLIST

Do you have a family emergency plan? 
Does it include:

Who will collect the children from school / day care I etc.?

[   ]

What older children should do if the parents are not at home?

[   ]

An agreed place to leave messages (front of the refrigerator, or similar)?

[   ]

A meeting and contact point if family members cannot get home?
(e.g. a relative or friend’s home)

[   ]

How to leave the house, in case of fire, or other threat?

[   ]

Where the nearest Civil Defence Emergency Centre is?

What to do about looking after your pets?

Do you know where to find the items for your emergency kit?
It should include:

Torch (with spare batteries and bulb).

[   ]

Transistor radio (with spare batteries).

[   ]

First Aid kit, and book. Have family members learned First Aid.

[   ]

Essential medicines, and medication.

[   ]

Important family documents, and photographs.

Has the family been taught the correct order to use food in an emergency ?

 Perishable first, then refrigerated, then frozen, then canned.

[   ]

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors dosed as much as possible if power has failed, or is switched off for safety.

Is your home safe?

Have any alterations been done which might affect its structural safety?

[   ]

Are heavy shelves, cabinets, etc. fastened securely to the walls?

[   ]

Have heavy pictures, mirrors, etc. been removed from above beds?

[   ]

Are petrol, sprays, etc. stored safely where they will not spill or leak?

[   ]

Do you have a smoke alarm installed in your home, and check and clean it regularly?

Have you taken steps to ensure you will have water, if water is turned off?

Have you containers suitable for storing water?

[   ]

Do family members know where & how to turn off water mains to prevent contaminated water entering the household plumbing?

[   ]

If you have a tank supply, are the tanks secured from toppling?

[   ]

Are the hot water cylinder and header tank strapped to the house framing?

[   ]

Does the family understand the need top conserve water?

Have you considered fire safety after an emergency?

Do you have a fire extinguisher? 
Do older members of the family know how to use it properly?

[   ]

Do family members know how to turn off electricity and gas mains to prevent the  possibility of fire?

[   ]

Extinguish solid fuel heaters and fires, and do not use them until they have been checked for safety (flues and chimneys especially).

Use torches or Cyalume light sticks, in preference to candles or gas lanterns which could pose a fire or explosion risk.

Have you considered how to safely dispose of waste, if the sewerage system and rubbish collection are not functioning?

Have you stored weed killers and other chemicals safely and securely, in such a way that they cannot tip over in an earthquake, or leak in a flood?

Have you spoken with your neighbors and discussed how you can help each other?

Do you, or they, have any special needs (disability, frailty, young children, etc.)?

Do you, or they, have tools, equipment, and/or skills that could be useful?

Is there someone who can keep an eye on your family if you have to report for duty at work during an emergency?

Are you involved in a Neighborhood Support Group (if there is one)?

Do you, and your neighbours, know that a sheet or towel hung out a window is a sign that help is needed?

Have you checked the adequacy of you insurance cover?

Is the value of your fire and other risks policy adequate for disaster cover, or is ’top up’ cover for reinstatement needed?

Do you need to discuss your insurance matters with your insurance company or broker?

After an Emergency

  • Keep calm
  • Remember your personal safety
  • Think before you act
  • Turn on and listen to the radio - nearest local operating station
  • Check on your family - reassure and calm them
  • Check on your neighbours Stay inside if possible - DO NOT go sightseeing!
  • Render First Aid
  • Extinguish fires
  • Turn Off all gas, electricity and water mains
  • Check and secure pets
  • Secure chemicals
  • Gather the items for your survival and getaway kits
  • Wear sensible clothing for the conditions (especially footwear) if going out
  • Avoid using the telephone, unless essential
  • Contact Civil Defence for assistance, if needed - check for the nearest operating Emergency Centre
