PHYSICAL ACTIVITY STRATEGY

The Clutha Physical Activity Strategy outlines a plan for the future direction of physical activity, sport and active recreation in the District.

In preparing the strategy, a Steering Group of the Clutha District Council, Public Health South and Sport Otago representatives and other key local individuals, gave valuable input and insights to guide its development.

The document took over a year to produce and its development also involved a comprehensive consultation process with communities throughout the district. Its completion is part of a nationwide initiative to enable local authorities to improve planning for physical activity and was achieved with financial support from Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC).

Its main goal is for “active and healthy communities in Clutha through more people being more active, more often, life long”. Its main objective is for “an average 1% annual increase in the level of physical activity in the Clutha population”.

The strategy provides an outline of six strategic directions identified during the consultation process, with goals and objectives for each.

Goals include:

·         Residents enjoying fair access to active, healthy lifestyles

·         Strong and sustainable sport and active recreation clubs contributing to community cohesion and identity

·         Safer and diverse walking and cycling opportunities for transport and recreation

·         Active lifestyles fostered in education

·         A sustainable network of sport and recreation facilities and open spaces

·         An informed up-to-date and physical activity aware community and leadership, implementing a responsive strategy
