Contract awarded for Lawrence main street upgrade
Clutha District Council is pleased to announce the award of the construction of the Lawrence main street upgrade to SouthRoads.
Manager District Assets Jules Witt said the $201,000 (+GST) contract includes an upgrade to the Gabriel’s Gully entrance and new carpark, a new pedestrian bridge on Gabriel’s Gully Road, new stone walls on the Hospital Creek Bridge, as well as new rubbish bins and street furniture in Ross Place.
Mr Witt said the contract was advertised during April and May and a total of seven tenders were received. The preferred tender is 1.5% lower than the available budget for the project of $204,000.
The work is expected to start around the end of June and will be ongoing for about 12 weeks. There will be some disruption during the construction phase and Council asks that people be patient during this time.
The main street upgrade is one aspect of an overall streetscape enhancement project for Lawrence to be completed in time for next year’s 150-year celebrations. This project will progress the bulk of the work that was originally proposed in 2004 as part of the Lawrence streetscape project that was consulted on widely with the community.
The Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board, following recent consultation with the community, has also agreed to proceed with the undergrounding of the power supply and new streetlighting for Ross Place.
Mr Witt said this work is expected to cost about $361,000, although the Community Board intends to have further discussions with PowerNet regarding its contribution to the costs of undergrounding the power lines.
