Wednesday 10 February 2010 Contract awarded for Milton stormwater protection work Clutha District Council is pleased to announce the award of the construction contract for the Milton stormwater pump station and floodbank to Waihola Excavation Limited. Manager District Assets Jules Witt said surface flooding had caused problems in Milton in recent years, particularly during major flooding events in April 2006 and August 2007. Mr Witt said the pump station would boost the capacity of the existing drainage system by emptying the outlet ends of the drains even when the river is high. The floodbank will prevent river water from entering drains while also protecting some low-lying properties. The pump station and floodbank construction contract was awarded for $777,705, the lowest of four tenders which ranged up to $1.07 million. It follows the completion of a drainage swale last year to divert water away from the Dryden St area in south-east Milton, which had been particularly prone to surface flooding from rainstorm runoff originating in nearby rural catchments. Mr Witt said construction of the pump station and floodbank is expected to take place before winter. If completed within budget, funding will be left over for further stormwater upgrades in the township. “This is a hugely significant project for the Milton community and we look forward to the successful completion of this important public work,” he said.
