Three receive
Tuapeka Bursary
The Tuapeka County
Bursary, designed to assist students with their tertiary studies, has been
awarded to three recipients this year.
They are:
-
Andrew Dickie (19),
from Tuapeka West, who has just completed his first year at the University of
Canterbury where he is studying economics and mathematics towards a Bachelor in
Science. Andrew’s long-term goal is to obtain a job in the banking industry or
in a government department such as Treasury or in the Reserve Bank. He is
attracted to a profession in economics due to the opportunities to make a
difference in the world and the opportunities for overseas work and travel.
-
Hannah Sim (19), of
Tapanui, has just completed her first year at the University of Otago where she
is studying towards a degree in Applied Science majoring in environmental
management. In future, Hannah would also like to undertake papers at Otago
Polytechnic in water reticulation. She hopes these qualifications will allow her
to work to help the sustainability of natural resources for future generations.
-
Curtis Pannett
(19), of Roxburgh, who has just completed his second year of study at the
University of Otago towards a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in economics and
finance. Once he finishes his degree, Curtis plans to complete a professional
pilot’s licence and enter the industry as an airline pilot. His long-term
aspiration is to use both his degree and experience as a pilot to engage in high
level management and operations control for a major airline.
The recipients each
receive $800 to assist them with their studies.
The bursary fund
was established by the former Tuapeka County Council prior to local government
amalgamation in 1989, and this is the 18th year it has been
available.
The bursary is
available to students who reside in the former Tuapeka County area, including
the townships of Lawrence, Tapanui and Roxburgh. It is designed to assist them
in their attendance at tertiary education institutes.
There were a total
of 13 applications received this year, all of a high calibre.
Students who meet
the eligibility criteria will have another opportunity to apply for the bursary
when it is readvertised again in late 2010.
