Tawanui Bridge Closure
Tawanui Bridge (bridge 239), spanning the Catlins River about 12km west of Owaka, will be closed until further notice to allow for the major repair of timber members, the Clutha District Council said today.
The bridge, which links Puketiro with the Owaka Valley, closed on Friday 6 November.
Manager District Assets Jules Witt said that a routine annual inspection of the bridge last month revealed damage to the top section of the bridge truss, possibly caused by an overloaded vehicle.
Mr Witt said the inspection prompted Council to immediately place load and speed restrictions on the bridge.
However during an inspection on Friday, further damage was discovered, prompting Council to immediately close the bridge.
“This damage is significantly affecting the capacity of the bridge and therefore we have no other option than to close it,” he said. “We realise this will inconvenience some motorists who regularly travel this route, however people’s safety is paramount and we have no option but to ensure the bridge is safe before it is reopened.”
Mr Witt said no timeframe had yet been set for reopening the bridge as Council staff would have to first assess the options for repair. Council will keep the local community and stakeholders informed as more information becomes available.
The alternative route for motorists is via the Papatowai Highway.
