Tuesday 27 October 2009 Kaitangata toilets locked after persistent vandalism Regular vandalism and arson in recent weeks has seen the Kaitangata Public toilets locked while repairs are undertaken, the Clutha District Council said today. District Assets Manager Jules Witt said the latest act of vandalism saw the toilets set on fire last weekend (17-18 October). Mr Witt said vandals had targeted the toilets and other Kaitangata community facilities several times over recent weeks. The repair bill for fire damage to the toilets and equipment from the nearby playground, and a forced entry to the swimming pool totalled $2,000, a cost which was ultimately borne by Kaitangata ratepayers. “The sum of repairs is clearly not sustainable and at this point in time we have no other option than to temporarily shut the toilets.” Mr Witt said vandalism would not be tolerated and Council would seek to prosecute anyone found to be causing wilful damage. “Anyone who sees this type of anti-social behaviour is urged to contact Council or the Police in order to support the local community and prevent these completely unnecessary costs,” he said. “The Kaitangata community has a vested interest in helping prevent further vandalism as ultimately it is their money that ends up paying the repair bills.” ENDS
