Olympian, scholars to be recognised
A resident Olympian and the recipients of this year’s Telford Bursary will be acknowledged at this Thursday’s (30 July 2009) meeting of the Clutha District Council.
Last month, the New Zealand Olympic Committee awarded uniquely numbered pins to chronicle the names of those 1111 Olympians who have represented New Zealand since the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. Athletes are numbered according to the first Olympic Games in which they competed and alphabetically within that team.
Clutha District resident Verina Wihongi represented New Zealand in Tae Kwon Do at Athens in 2004, and will attend the afternoon break at tomorrow’s Council meeting to receive pin number 972.
The full list of New Zealand Olympians by number can be viewed at www.olympic.org.nz and are listed alphabetically by games.
Meanwhile, Telford Polytechnic students Phil Crossland and Ezekiel Turner will also attend the afternoon break of tomorrow’s meeting to address Council and receive the Telford Bursary Award for 2009.
The Bursary was established by Council in 1993. It is awarded each year to a Telford student(s) studying towards the Diploma in Rural Business and/or Certificate in Agriculture. |
