Tuapeka Mouth Bridge closed for 10 weeks

Tuapeka Mouth Bridge will be closed until approximately 26 June 2009 to allow for the major repair or replacement of steel beams, Clutha District Council announced today.
The bridge, linking Tuapeka Mouth Road and Tuapeka West Road at Tuapeka Mouth, was initially closed to traffic on 14 April 2009 to allow for the routine replacement of timber decking, which was last replaced about 25 years ago.
Council Manager District Assets Jules Witt said that this work was scheduled to be completed and the bridge re-opened on 25 April. But the additional work means that the revised bridge opening date is now estimated to be 26 June.
Mr Witt said that after contractors removed the timber decking, they noticed that the top sections of the five steel beams supporting the timber had experienced significant deterioration due to rust (pictured over page).
“This deterioration is significantly affecting the capacity of the bridge and therefore the steel beams will have to undergo major repair or be replaced,” Mr Witt said. “We realise this will further inconvenience motorists who regularly travel this route. However, people’s safety is paramount and we have no option but to ensure the bridge is safe before it is reopened.”
This extended closure will have a major impact on local road users and Council is working with the consultant and contractor to provide limited alternative access across the river. At this stage pedestrian access across the river is proposed but light vehicle access will be dependent on a number of issues being resolved. Council will keep affected property owners informed as more information becomes available.
The alternative route for motorists travelling this route is through the Lawrence township.
