Three receive
Tuapeka Bursary
The Tuapeka County
Bursary, designed to assist students with their tertiary studies, has been
awarded to three recipients this year.
They are:
-
Claire Tweed
(24), of Waitahuna, who this year will complete her third and final year at
the Otago Polytechnic where she is studying towards a Bachelor of Nursing.
Claire is committed to becoming a registered nurse and intends on working in a
rural area – she has requested to complete at least one of her three
placements this year at the Lawrence Health Centre or other places in the
South Otago area.
-
Rachel Mariu
(20), from Tapanui, has just completed her second year at the Otago University
College of Education through the Southland Campus towards a Bachelor of
Education in Primary Bilingual Teaching. Rachel plans to build on her
knowledge of Te Reo Maori and hopes to put her knowledge into practice by
teaching in the West Otago/Southland area after she graduates.
-
Ruby Mills (19),
from Roxburgh, will this year complete her third and final year at the
University of Otago where she is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts majoring
in English and minoring in Anthropology. At the end of the year, Ruby plans to
travel to either South America or Africa to teach English and help address
issues facing those communities.
The recipients each
receive $800 to assist them with their studies.
The bursary fund
was established by the former Tuapeka County Council prior to amalgamation in
1989, and this is the 17th year it has been available.
The bursary is
available to students who reside in the former Tuapeka County area, including
the townships of Lawrence, Tapanui and Roxburgh. It is designed to assist them
in their attendance at tertiary education institutes.
There were 13
applications received this year.
Students who meet the eligibility
criteria will have another opportunity to apply for the bursary when it is
readvertised in November 2009.
