Acclaimed children’s author to visit

Esteemed New Zealand writer Ken Catran will visit the Balclutha Library later this month for a convivial evening of talking books.

Ken Catran is an award-winning writer of over 30 acclaimed novels for young adults, and was also one of the founding writers for the popular Shortland Street series, and prior to that Close to Home.

In 2007, he was the winner of New Zealand’s most prestigious award for children’s writers – the Storyline’s Margaret Mahy Medal to acknowledge a distinguished contribution to New Zealand children’s literature. Many of his books focus on science-fiction, although his interests also include historical fiction, mystery and comic relief.

Council’s Library/Service Centre Manager, Vicki Darling, said that during his Balclutha visit on 26 May, Ken would talk about writing, including where creativity begins, the process of writing a book, characterisation, research and plot structure, and keeping the reader interested.

“This will be of great interest to all readers and writers of all ages,” Ms Darling. “It will be a great opportunity to gain an insight into the mind of one of New Zealand’s finest authors.”

The Ken Catran evening will be held at the Balclutha Library on Monday 26 May from 7pm, with light refreshments to follow.
