Wednesday 7 May 2008 “Keep Left” message promoted The Clutha District Council will begin installing directional arrows on high-volume tourist routes throughout the district, in a bid to reinforce the ‘Keep Left’ message to touring motorists. The decision, made at last week’s Council meeting, follows concerns raised by councillors in recent times that many tourists were stopping at tourist spots then driving away from the stops on the wrong side of the road. This had recently resulted in an accident. Manager District Assets Jules Witt said the painted arrows were a cost-effective way to promote the ‘Keep Left’ message to tourists, with the typical installation cost of a double directional arrow about $340 per site. Mr Witt said that Council staff would initially target the Southern Scenic Route by looking at 10 sites where directional arrows could be installed. Catlins Ward Councillor Kevin Thompson welcomed the decision by noting that the issue of touring motorists driving on the wrong side of the road was of huge concern to locals. |
