Friday 22 February 2008 Official opening for new Finlayson Road seal The Clutha District Council is pleased to announce it will officially open the newly sealed Finlayson Road on Sunday 2 March. Finlayson Road, which runs between Taieri Mouth and Waihola, was the final portion of the iconic Southern Scenic Route to be sealed. Clutha District Mayor Juno Hayes will mark this special occasion by officially opening the newly sealed road, at the intersection of Finlayson Road and Galloway Road, near Taieri Mouth, at 11.30am on Sunday 2 March. This will be immediately followed by a free sausage sizzle and light refreshments at the Leitch Memorial Hall. The $2.2 million sealing project was one of the first significant construction projects in Otago to be funded from the Regional ‘R’ Fund – made available by Land Transport New Zealand through the extra 5c fuel tax which has been levied per litre of fuel sold since 2005. The fund amounts to $95 million to be spent throughout the Otago region during the next 10 years. Through the fund, Land Transport NZ pays about $1.6 million of the total Finlayson Road seal extension project cost. The remaining $679,000 is funded by Council by way of a loan. All Taieri Mouth and Waihola residents, as well as the wider community, are invited to attend the official opening. |
