MEDIA RELEASE

Summer reading programme celebrated

Clutha District Libraries yesterday celebrated the reading achievements of over 40 local children who completed its 2007/08 Summer Reading Programme organised by Children’s Librarian Joyce Nelson

Guest Speaker and Queen’s Service Medal winner Murray Moore, of Stirling, handed out rewards, which children earned by meeting their summer reading goals under the programme theme of ‘Reach for the Sky’.

As well as reading as many books as they could over summer, participants in the programme also filled in a reading ‘passport’ which asked them geographical and historical questions about the South Island. Every participant who reached their reading destination goal received a prize.

Mr Moore praised all those children who had taken part in the Summer Reading Programme and encouraged them to continue to strive to reach their reading goals.

Mr Moore was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal in the 2008 New Years Honours for services to education and the community.
