Wednesday 13 February 2008 Mayoral Challenge this weekend The Clutha Country Mayoral Challenge is on this weekend, and Clutha Mayor Juno Hayes is inviting all local residents to join him for a picnic and mountain bike ride at Green Park Scout Camp, just outside of Balclutha, from Noon this Sunday 17 February. In this New Zealand-wide Mayoral Challenge competition, towns and cities compete for the title of Cycle Mad City by getting as many local people as possible to follow the mayor on a fun mountain bike ride. Every participant earns one point for their area, and ‘celebrities’ are worth 10 bonus points each. The Clutha event will include a 7km novice ride, an 11km intermediate ride, and a 20km advanced ride. There will also be a walk through the Roscoe Falls area for anyone interested. Local organiser, Sport Clutha Coordinator Kelvin Carruthers, said all participants who cycled would go into a draw to win an Avanti Discovery hybrid mountain-bike/road cycle. “This will be a great family event which encourages local people to be more active while also taking in some of the Clutha District’s most beautiful farmland. Bring along a picnic and the whole family, the bike ride will start at 1.30pm,” he said. The Green Park Scout Camp is signposted from the Clutha Vet Club, Balclutha.
