Thursday 24 January 2008 New district sign unveiled Visitors and motorists entering the Clutha District via State Highway 1 north of Waihola will now receive an even friendlier welcome with the first of the new district boundary signs unveiled today (Thursday 24 January 2008). After 18 months of planning the new ‘Clutha Country’ boundary sign was unveiled onsite, at the intersection of SH1, Taieri Ferry Road and Titri Road, by District Development Board Chairman Cr Jeff Seymour and Clutha Deputy Mayor Hamish Anderson. Cr Seymour said the need for new district boundary signs was first identified through consultation on Council’s last Long Term Plan in 2006. “Some Long Term Plan submitters felt there was a need for greater community pride, and the current district boundary signs were looking in desperate need of repair,” he said. “It has been a long process in getting to this point, but the end result looks fantastic. This sign will be something which the entire district can take great pride in and will provide a warm welcome for visitors to our area.” The new boundary sign, constructed by Dunedin company Miller Studios, is 2.7m high and 2m wide, with an aluminium powder coating sitting on a concrete base lined with macrocarpa. Council’s District Development Manager Julie Pearse said a smaller ‘secondary’ district boundary sign would now be erected on State Highway 90 between Gore and Tapanui. Council also planned to erect two further district boundary signs at the district’s southern boundary on SH1, and at Rae’s Junction on State Highway 8, as well as several further secondary signs throughout the district over the next year, Mrs Pearse said.
