Media statement from the Mt Stuart-Manuka Trust 21 January 2008 Annual family picnic day A fun family picnic day is planned at the Mt Stuart Picnic Reserve on Waitangi day Wednesday 6 February from 11 am. Market stalls, games, raffles sausage sizzle and more will raise funds for the ongoing development of the reserve and surrounds. Thanks to the amazing work done by an enthusiastic group of local volunteers and the Dunedin Community Probation Services, Mt Stuart Reserve has been restored to a desirable picnic area experienced in the early days of this community. Over the last two years children from local schools, the Otago Regional Council, and the Dunedin Community Probation Services have planted daffodils, rhododendrons, camellias, magnolias and natives to complement the already established garden dating back to the late 1800s. Seats and tables are located at strategic places for maximum enjoyment of the environment and river. A walking track downstream to Glenore enhances the recreational utility of the reserve and is suitable for most adults and children. A stroll up Falla Burn road to the old railway viaduct, and drive through Manuka Gorge to walk the track to the Manuka railway tunnel is also recommended to discover the beauty of this area. Mt Stuart Reserve is signposted on SH8 between Milton and Lawrence. For more information contact Mt Stuart – Manuka Trust Committee members Alan Williams (03) 417 8170 Janice Clayton (03) 417 4502 |
