MEDIA RELEASE

 Lawrence Swimming Pool closure

The Lawrence Swimming Pool will close temporarily from Tuesday 29 January due to problems with water clarity, the Clutha District Council announced today.

District Swimming Pool supervisor Holly Ramsay said flaking paint and a fine silty material had caused the pool water to become murky, reducing visibility. “The reduced visibility is a risk and that is why the water will be replaced.”

The pool would remain open next week due to scheduled swimming lessons, but would close for about four days from 29 January so the water could be drained and the problem investigated further before new water was put into the pool.

“We realise this closure will inconvenience pool users, however, it is better to address the problem now before it becomes worse.”

Miss Ramsay said she expected the pool would reopen about 2 February.
