Road and Bridge Closures

Bridge 462, Tuapeka Flat Rd is currently closed to traffic and was planned to re-open this Friday. But, due to have river levels and flooding, work has stopped as the scaffolding is currently submerged. This will delay the reopening. Katea Bridge is in a similar situation as it is currently unsafe to work on the bridge, this may delay it's reopening. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Do you Love Food but Hate Waste?

NZ Families waste about $560 each year on food, which is thrown into the rubbish bin. This results in 122,000 tonnes of edible food going to the landfill. The Love Food Hate Waste website is launching on 1 June, click here for more information.

Naish Park Duck Pond

Council is aware that a recent news story about the Naish Park duck pond sparked comments from some residents. But, we want to be clear that no decision has yet been made about removing the ducks or filling in the pond. Unfortunately, the quality of the pond water, the amount of duck excrement on paths and furniture, and the damage the ducks are doing to the grass has become a problem and a safety concern. The area is cleaned four times a year, but this is obviously not enough and any extra cleans would would cost about $500 a clean. A review of the district's parks is scheduled to begin in the next 12 months, when Council will look at all the options. However, before any decision is made about the future of the pond, the public will get a chance to have their say. At this stage it would be great if people could stop feeding the ducks to see if this reduces the problem. Thanks very much.
