Naish Park Duck Pond
Council is aware that a recent news story
about the Naish Park duck pond sparked comments from some
residents. But, we want to be clear that no decision has yet been
made about removing the ducks or filling in the pond.
Unfortunately, the quality of the pond water, the amount of duck
excrement on paths and furniture, and the damage the ducks are
doing to the grass has become a problem and a safety concern. The
area is cleaned four times a year, but this is obviously not
enough and any extra cleans would would cost about $500 a clean. A
review of the district's parks is scheduled to begin in the next
12 months, when Council will look at all the options. However,
before any decision is made about the future of the pond, the
public will get a chance to have their say. At this stage it would
be great if people could stop feeding the ducks to see if this
reduces the problem. Thanks very much.
