BALCLUTHA CENTENNIAL POOL UPGRADE

This page was last updated on Monday 26 March 2012

What is happening?Artist's impression of completed Balclutha Pool upgrade.

The Balclutha Centennial Pool is currently undergoing a major upgrade to bring it up to modern standards.

The upgrade includes:

  • Replacement of the old asbestos roof and walls.

  • Reconfiguration of the current Learner’s Pool to provide a better and safer area for toddlers with a shallower ‘beach’ pool.

  • Upgraded changing rooms to make them more family friendly.

  • Renewal of the heating and ventilation system.

  • Upgraded pool entrance.

How much will it cost?Artist's impression of completed Balclutha Pool upgrade.

The $3.49 million contract for this project was awarded to Dunedin based company Lund South Ltd in May 2011.

Under Council’s current revenue and funding policy, this project will add about $67 + GST to the Balclutha Community Services rate (depending on property value) and about $8 + GST to the Uniform Annual General Charge which is set on all households across the district.

When will the pool reopen?

At this stage, the pool is expected to reopen in late May 2012.

What about the therapeutic pool and bulk head?

A fundraising drive by the local community has secured the additional funding required for two further upgrade components:

  • A therapeutic pool designed for use including the relief of tired and aching muscles, rehabilitation and relaxation.

  • A fibreglass bulkhead that would separate the main pool into a 25m pool for lane swimming etc, and a new learner’s area.

How is the project tracking?

Update as of 26 March 2012

The new roof is now on and remaining interior work is now well underway. Tiling work, painting and carpentry work is also in progress.
